EU Discovers Web 4.0 Buzzwords

Why is this IndustryTrends Hype meme funny?

Level 1: Naming Tomorrow

This is like a school announcing "Classroom 4.0" before anyone understands what happened to "Classroom 3.0." The funny part is that the grown-ups sound very serious about rules, standards, and the future, but the picture makes it feel like the future is just three video-game-looking people waiting in a government office.

Level 2: Web Labels Multiply

Web development started with ordinary web pages, links, browsers, forms, and servers. People often use Web 2.0 for the social, interactive web: platforms, user-generated content, feeds, and apps in the browser. Web3 usually refers to decentralization ideas, often involving blockchains, wallets, tokens, or federated systems, though the term is used inconsistently.

In the screenshot, the official post talks about "openness and decentralisation" and then promotes "Web 4.0" as a blend of virtual and real environments. That connects to AR, VR, digital identity, avatars, and industrial applications. The bottom image of three 3D characters makes the announcement feel like it is about a virtual public-service world.

For a junior developer, the lesson is that technical labels can be slippery. A term like "open standard" usually has a concrete meaning: different systems can interoperate because they follow shared rules. A term like "Web 4.0" may be more aspirational. It points toward a cluster of ideas rather than a single technology you can install with npm.

Level 3: Standards Before Reality

The screenshot is funny because it has the rhythm of an official policy announcement wrapped around a term that already sounds like it escaped from a consulting deck. It opens with:

If you are reading this, you enjoy the openness and decentralisation of Web 3.0.

Then it accelerates directly into:

Web 4.0 will blend virtual and real environments while boosting innovation, rich content and industrial applications.

That jump is the joke. A lot of developers still treat Web 3.0 as a contested bundle of decentralization, crypto, wallets, identity experiments, token incentives, and marketing fog. The meme's post text says people do not even know what Web 3.0 is, while the European Commission screenshot is already arranging committees for Web 4.0. Nothing says technological inevitability like governance language arriving before the user need has finished loading.

The visible bullet list is a perfect piece of buzzword bingo:

Shape global standards for open Web 4.0

Foster a European Web 4.0 industrial ecosystem

Boost access to trusted information

Support virtual public services

Each bullet is defensible in isolation. Open standards matter. Trustworthy information matters. Public services should improve. Industrial ecosystems are real things governments care about. The satire comes from packing them under a label that feels simultaneously futuristic and vague. Developers have seen this pattern before: a broad umbrella term appears, everyone maps their existing roadmap into it, and suddenly the same old platform project is wearing a new numbered hat.

The three polished 3D avatar characters deepen the joke because they make "the future of the web" look like a public-sector metaverse lobby. It evokes the period when every organization needed a virtual world strategy, even if the actual use case was a meeting room with worse legs. The image is not mocking standards work itself. Standards are why the web works at all. It is mocking the gap between careful interoperability and the bureaucratic urge to name the next epoch before developers, users, and products have agreed what the current epoch means.

Description

A screenshot of a European Commission post from @[email protected] says, "If you are reading this, you enjoy the openness and decentralisation of Web 3.0." It continues: "On #WorldWideWebDay, let's fast-forward to the future. Web 4.0 will blend virtual and real environments while boosting innovation, rich content and industrial applications. To ensure everyone benefits from it, we will: - Shape global standards for open Web 4.0 - Foster a European Web 4.0 industrial ecosystem - Boost access to trusted information - Support virtual public services. How? ➡️ europa.eu/!hJrNc4" Below the text is a social-post preview with three polished 3D avatar characters and visible footer details "Aug 01, 2023, 09:43," plus engagement counts including 44 and 66. The humor is the bureaucratic leap from Web 3.0 confusion straight into official Web 4.0 strategy language, complete with decentralization, virtual worlds, trusted information, standards, and public-service metaverse vibes.

That's the point: no one has no idea what is it that's why they skip it for standardization for web 4.0

  5. @ercolebellucci 2y

how about improving 3.0 and not doing 4.0?

I've seen recently an article about web3 gaming console which looks just like old gameboy. and if you ask yourself what is it for? the author said "The mining power of the physical device is very, very weak. It will take years to mine…you’re not going to make real money from it. But it’s for fun." fun with poor quality games on slow old hardware for 500$
