MMO Crafting Becomes Resource Engineering

Why is this Games meme funny?

Level 1: Counting Ingredients

It is funny because the game is supposed to be an adventure, but the player has turned it into careful math homework. It is like wanting to bake one fancy cake and then building a machine that tells you exactly how much flour, sugar, and chocolate you need depending on which spoon you use. The joke is that players will happily become engineers if the game makes the recipe complicated enough.

Level 2: Calculator As Tooling

Tooling means software that helps people do work more efficiently. In programming, that could be a formatter, debugger, build system, test runner, or dashboard. In this image, the tooling is a game calculator. It helps New World players estimate how many resources they need to craft an item under different conditions.

The visible post says the calculator works "exactly as game does" and includes "gear and all tiers for refining material." That means the author is not just multiplying one ingredient list. They are trying to copy the game's crafting logic. If better gear or higher-tier refining materials reduce the required resources, the calculator has to include those options and show the difference. The faint table at the bottom suggests a comparison view: one setup with stronger refining materials and gear, another with weaker materials and no gear, then a Difference column.

For developers, this is familiar because many real systems need small calculators like this. A cloud-cost estimator, a build-time estimator, a migration planner, and a game crafting calculator all ask the same basic question: "Given these inputs and rules, what will this cost?" The hard part is rarely drawing the table. The hard part is matching the real system closely enough that users trust the result.

Level 3: Spreadsheet Endgame Content

The screenshot is framed as a Reddit post from newworldgame, but the title reads like a requirements document:

Craft calculator for New World which calculates required resources exactly as game does with gear and all tiers for refining material

That is the joke: an MMO crafting system has become complex enough that a player built tooling around it like they were implementing procurement software. The visible text mentions Glittering Ebony, crafting gear bonuses, top-tier refining materials, and a table comparing resource requirements. This is not just "I made a fan page." This is someone reverse-engineering a game economy until it can produce a bill of materials with enough confidence to ask strangers to check the math.

The developer humor comes from the overlap between GamingCulture and actual production engineering. A crafting calculator has to model dependencies: raw materials become refined materials, refined materials become components, components become final items, and bonuses change how much input is required. That is a graph problem wearing a fantasy hat. Once gear bonuses and tiered materials enter the formula, the tool has to track conditional rules, rounding behavior, multipliers, and the difference between what the game UI says and what the underlying calculation actually does. Nothing relaxes the soul after work like building a second job for your first hobby.

The line DRAMATICALLY decreases amount of required resources also nails the optimization instinct. Games with deep crafting systems create scarcity, and scarcity creates tooling. Players want to know whether expensive refining materials are worth using, whether crafting gear pays for itself, and where the break-even point sits. That is DataAnalysis and ResourceManagement, just with ore, wood, and rare components instead of cloud spend. The meme works because it shows the same pattern developers see everywhere: once a system has enough hidden rules, the community builds an unofficial dashboard before the official UI catches up.

Description

The image is a Reddit post screenshot from r/newworldgame with the New World crossed-axes icon and an orange Reddit logo in the top right. The headline reads, "Craft calculator for New World which calculates required resources exactly as game does with gear and all tiers for refining material." Below it are the lines "Video presentation:", "Link to Glittering Ebony, so you can check it yourself!", and "As you may see, usage of crafting gear with bonus and top tier refining material DRAMATICALLY decreases amount of required resources, table to make it cleaner:" A faint table begins underneath with headings including "With t5 ref mats and gear," "With t3 ref mats and w/o gear," and "Difference," and the bottom shows 1.4K upvotes and 42 comments. The technical angle is community tooling: someone has modeled an MMO crafting system closely enough to produce a resource calculator and comparison table.
