Linus Torvalds Admits to Vibe Coding His Python Audio Visualizer
Description
A screenshot of a GitHub repository page for 'torvalds/AudioNoise' with the description 'Random digital audio effects'. The repo shows tabs: Code, Issues (2), Pull requests (3), Actions. The key content, highlighted in yellow, reads: 'Also note that the python visualizer tool has been basically written by vibe-coding. I know more about analog filters -- and that's not saying much -- than I do about python. It started out as my typical "google and do the monkey-see-monkey-do" kind of programming, but then I cut out the middle-man -- me -- and just used Google Antigravity to do the audio sample visualizer.' The commit info shows 'torvalds Add README and LICENSE file' from '71b256a - 2 days ago'. The meme captures the surreal moment of Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux and Git, openly admitting to vibe-coding a Python project

The man who wrote Git and the Linux kernel in C admits he vibe-coded Python. Somewhere, a CS professor just felt a disturbance in the force

i hate the fact this will give cred to vibecoders and (their) managers who will just ignore the fact he's been doing kernel most of the internet and tech relies upon for twice the time the average vibecoder's been alive Comment deleted
Let's not forget he's a PhD in CS - that allows him to vibecode, because he knows what good and what bad code is, and i don't believe he just let the ai go on its own way to produce the slop it tends to love so much Comment deleted
Back in my roots it was told that if you can't write code without ide, you must not use ide. I guess the same rule works for vibe coding ten tines better Comment deleted
Agreed for vibecoders, but for ide it's kinda meh, goto definition is ultimate tool Comment deleted
it isn't a IDE-only feature. you just need a language server Comment deleted
Kinda true, but given what LSP servers can do today... The IDE is text editor with ide like plugins, the old ide is lsp now Comment deleted
Sometimes, you just don't want to write every function and parameter by hand while flipping between documentation and vim :) Comment deleted
Point is in ability to do so which is believed to be the proof of your skills Comment deleted
How it even possible to be able to write code ONLY in IDE ? Its basically text editor with a lot of helper tools, neither of them are critical to actual writing code Comment deleted
For that you need to be aware of the tools your IDE invoke. It's quite easy to find out you can modify code with any other text editor, but finding what compiler are used when you click on IDEs buttons and how to use it directly can be quite hard if nobody ever explained it to you Comment deleted
Maybe true if you are a C dev who writes everything by yourself instead of using libs or are using man pages, grepping for lib api ref from readme files, etc. In web it would be such a pain that an ide with lsp and inline warning/errors is a must have otherwise you would go insane Comment deleted
I prefer to without an IDE but it's hard to find programming languages with compilers that allow this. TinyC is nice for this reason Comment deleted
you could try go Comment deleted
Wdym "compilers that allow this" ? Comment deleted
Linus Torvalds is OK with vibe coding as long as it's not used for anything that matters. Comment deleted
Good "vibe" coding isn't really vibe coding at all, because vibe coding implies the person isn't doing basically any of the work and really doesn't understand what the code does Comment deleted
truth nuke Comment deleted
I will note that the only vibecoded part is 400 lines of python (around 40% of the LoC in this repo) that visualizes the actual main part of the code, written entirely by hand in C - AS A LEARNING PROJECT so this is twice removed from being in production. and people are going nuts over it. laughable imo Comment deleted
it's twitter mostly going nuts over it Comment deleted
close. it's telegram. point being? Comment deleted
eng is my second language, quite stupid of me to not finish the sentence Comment deleted
ah I see what you meant now Comment deleted
haven't been on twitter in years, but the fact it's been posted here like it says anything about linus and AI just irked me… Comment deleted
Where are credits to me? Comment deleted
Thank me later, liberals. Comment deleted
He probably got an ad contract from google, that’s it. Comment deleted

I make games. If it's not appropriate for game dev or normal business use I try not to use it Comment deleted
what do you mean by normal business use? I code nearly all my webstuff in go. Works good Comment deleted
Stuff aside from web dev Comment deleted

what does this have to do with linus torvalds doing a lil bit of vibecoding in his side-project? Comment deleted
tl;dr Comment deleted
this wasn't a bot Comment deleted
true, it was a pedo Comment deleted
