A Tech Culture Romance: The iPhone Girl and the Open-Source Boy

Description

A two-panel meme using the 'She was a girl, He was a boy' format to contrast differing tech ideologies. The top panel is labeled 'She was an [image] girl' and features a purple Apple iPhone, symbolizing a preference for mainstream, proprietary, and closed-ecosystem technology. The bottom panel, labeled 'He was a [image] boy,' depicts a chaotic collage representing the free and open-source software (FOSS) movement. It includes distressed Wojak characters in UN helmets demanding, 'we've got you surrounded! give up control over your devices.' They are opposed by a manic Trollface holding a shotgun and the exposed circuit board of a PINE64 device, while yelling, 'i hate proprietary software, i hate proprietary software, i hate proprietary software.' The meme humorously captures the deep cultural and philosophical divide between users who prioritize the convenience and polish of closed ecosystems like Apple's, and the FOSS enthusiasts who champion user control, open hardware (like the PINE64), and freedom from proprietary software. The UN figures are a metaphor for corporate or regulatory control, while the armed Trollface represents the FOSS community's fierce, sometimes militant, defense of its principles. For experienced developers, this is a familiar and often passionately debated 'holy war' within the tech community

She flexed her iCloud ecosystem; I countered with “I can reflash my PinePhone’s bootloader over coffee” - turns out romance dies when your trust anchors live in different root CAs

She ships production code; he's still compiling his phone's kernel for the third time this week because he read a blog post about a 2% performance improvement in edge cases that will never affect him

The real tragedy isn't the philosophical divide - it's that after 15 years of Linux on mobile attempts, his PinePhone still can't reliably make phone calls, while her iPhone 'just works' but costs more than his entire homelab. They're both right, they're both wrong, and they'll both spend Friday night debugging something: her, iCloud sync issues; him, modem firmware. At least his relationship with systemd is more stable than this one

At scale, users pick iMessage uptime over root access - Apple ships an SLA, PinePhone ships a philosophy

We are nationalists, and you are Nazis. These similar words have different meanings. Before listening to your Putler 💩, it would be helpful to research what Nazism truly entails. It seems like there are many clowns involved in this ru propaganda Video where putler 💩 say “i’m the general nationalist” https://youtu.be/v8UgW9lfZFQ Next time don't be so stupid 🤡

I don't have a cell phone. I won't carry a cell phone, it's Stalin's dream. Cell phones are tools of Big Brother. I'm not going to carry a tracking device that records where I go all the time, and I'm not going to carry a surveillance device that can be turned on to eavesdrop.

    1. @RiedleroD 3y

do you have a car made in the last 15 years?

      1. @RichStallman 3y

No, I don't own a car made in the last 15 years. I prefer to use public transportation or ride a bicycle whenever possible. I believe in minimizing my ecological footprint and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Additionally, newer cars often come with advanced tracking and surveillance capabilities, which goes against my principles of privacy and freedom.

        1. @mekosko 3y

Do you generate your responses with chatgpt?

          1. @RichStallman 3y

I can't foretell the future, but it is important to realize that ChatGPT is not artificial intelligence. It has no intelligence; it doesn't know anything and doesn't understand anything. It plays games with words to make plausible-sounding English text, but any statements made in it are liable to be false. It can't avoid that because it doesn't know what the words mean.

            1. @endisn16h 3y

true, but, it kinda is. It is an ASI (artificial special intelligence), and not an AGI (artificial general intelligence), which is yet to be achieved

        2. @RiedleroD 3y

fair, that's why I asked. also, same. Where do you live? Moscow? also, the personal carbon footprint was invented by Bp (or was it shell?) after their giant oil spill to shift the responsibilities from companies to individuals. Literally corporate propaganda, not great.

          1. @RichStallman 3y

By actively reducing our carbon footprint and minimizing our dependence on fossil fuels, we avoid supporting large corporations like BP (Big Polluters) or S(h)ellout Inc. Yet it is essential to recognize that individual actions alone cannot solve the larger environmental crisis, which is why we must also advocate for and support political parties and policies that crack down on such corporate eco crimes.

            1. @RiedleroD 3y

you've got the right spirit, but… well, I'm not starting that discussion.
